Police nab speedy drivers

Speedsters and drivers who flouted the road rules copped the most fines on Melton and Moorabool roads during a statewide blitz.

Police conducted Operation Arid during the Labour Day long weekend and 47 drivers in Melton and 71 in Hume were nabbed for speeding.

The four-day operation ran from midnight on March 9 to midnight March 12.

In Melton, 14 unregistered vehicles were picked up, along with 12 unlicenced drivers and six who were disqualified.

Only one driver was found to be over the alcohol limit but seven were under the influence of drugs.

Road policing assistant commissioner Doug Fryer said it was concerning the number of drug drivers had increased statewide compared to last year’s operation with one in every six motorists detected with drugs in their system.

“Time and time again we plead to those taking to our roads to take care, to not speed, to not use phones and to not drink and drive,” assistant commissioner Fryer said.

“It is frustrating and just terribly sad that over the weekend another six families now face the true reality of road trauma.

“Safe road user behaviour starts with every single one of us.

“The operation may have finished however our members will still be focused on keeping you safe on the roads.”

Eight unregistered vehicles were picked up on Moorabool roads and three
drivers were detected using their mobile phone.
