Melton opens with a win

Melton started the Bowls Victoria Pennant season in strong fashion on Saturday.

Playing on its newly laid green, Melton opened up its account in division 1, section 1, with an 81 (16)-57 (2) win against Fitzroy Victoria.

Melton secretary John Adams said everyone was rapt to open the season with a win.

“They were last year’s runners-up,” he said.

“It’s pretty hard to get winning rinks over them and we got three rinks up.”

Ray Gnjidic, David George and Travis Kelly led the winning rinks for Melton, with Conrad Dawson’s rink losing by five shots.

Adams said the winning team wasn’t even their strongest side with players still to come in.

“Samantha Shannahan [who has played for Australia] didn’t play and we’ve got a couple more players in the wings.

“I put a clearance through on Friday and I’ve got another three clearances to put through. We’ve got players wanting to come to the club.”

While Melton’s top side took the win, it was a mixed day for the club’s other sides.

The division 2 side gave up a 15 shot lead at afternoon tea, to lose by seven shots.

The division 4 team lost by one shot, the division 6 and 7 teams also lost.
