Melton council has won a state award for a program that promotes the rights of people with disabilities.
The Victorian Disability Awards celebrate people and organisations who make outstanding contributions to empowering people with disabilities and creating an inclusive community.
Melton council’s Disability Advisory Committee, which comprises councillors, council staff and community members, won the Excellence in Promoting Rights, Fairness and Safety category.
The committee earned praise for its Disability Action Plan, which included the Melton Library and Learning Hub’s design, which focused on accessibility.
The design included an adult change facility for people with disabilities.
The committee also won the award because of its accessible schools street parking audit that led to disability parking around Melton schools.
Mayor Sophie Ramsey said the award was a fantastic achievement.
“The award was achieved through the great work they have done advocating to council on a number of major projects, and their involvement in implementing our Disability Action Plan 2013-2017,” she said.
“Winning this award raises the profile of Disability Advisory Committees across Victoria and showcases our commitment to achieving access and inclusion for all.”
