Cobras build on flying start

It may be only its first year, but Bacchus Marsh women’s football team has no fear.

The Cobras, established in February, have met every challenge head-on in the west division of the Victorian Women’s Football League.

Bacchus Marsh got its first win of the season in round two, smashing Kyneton by 80 points.

And while that has been the only win, Cobras team manager Rod Bertram says that, off-field, it’s been a great start to the season.

“The numbers are increasing all the time and we’re getting a lot of inquiries from girls wanting to play,” he says.

“People are more aware we exist. I think next year will be even bigger because we’ll have had a year of competition.”

While the Cobras didn’t have to wait long for their first win, there have been some heavy defeats to navigate since.

But Bacchus Marsh responded in the best possible fashion, taking it up to some of the league’s strongest teams in their second meetings. The Cobras were ultra-competitive against second-placed Melton Centrals and third-placed Manor Lakes in recent weeks.

“I think by the end of the season we’ll be matching it with Melton, Manor Lakes and Jacana,” Bertram says.

At the top end of the ladder, there’s no stopping Sunbury Lions, who have smashed their way through the west division with nine wins in nine matches.
