Founder’s lap of honour

One of the founding members of Melton South Little Athletics will be remembered for his love and dedication to the club and the community.

Barry Taylor, who was a life member of the club, died suddenly earlier this month.

Mr Taylor was named Melton Citizen of the Year in 2010 at an Australia Day honours ceremony for his contribution to sport and the youth.

His daughter Catherine Woodruff said he was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and treated the athletics community as his extended family.

“Dad was always involved with Little Athletics because he loved watching the kids achieve,” Ms Woodruff told

Star Weekly.

“All of his kids went through the club too. He just had a real passion for it. He will be very missed by a lot of people.”

Mr Taylor served the athletics community since 1969, first in Bacchus Marsh before establishing the club to service Melton South in 1973. The club paid its respect to Mr Taylor with an online video clip.

“Our family has lost a dear friend and pioneer,” the club’s tribute said.

“So make every hurdle, jump, throw and run count and do it for Barry Taylor.”

In the video clip, Mr Taylor said he served his sport for the enjoyment he got out of it.

“I love watching the kids run, especially watching many stars that go from under 6s right through to under 16s, and watching them grow is a thrill,” he said.

Club and community members will complete a lap of honour of the new Melton South Little Athletics track in Mr Taylor’s honour after his service today (Wednesday, August 15) at the Parish of Saint Anthony of Padua.
