Second-half blitz a joy for Green Gully

The fog has lifted at last for Green Gully in the National Premier League soccer.

The Cavaliers snapped a six-game winless run with an emphatic 3-0 win over Avondale at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday evening.

The win ended a frustrating period in the league for the Cavs, who drew five of their previous six games since beating the Melbourne Knights on April 29.

The Cavaliers secured the long-awaited win with a commanding second-half performance that yielded three goals.

Wade Dekker put Green Gully in front seven minutes after half-time and there was no stopping his side from that point on.

Nick Krousoratis found the back of the net in the 79th minute and Jay Davies put the icing on the cake with a goal in stoppage time.

Green Gully will take a great deal of confidence out of the win which moves it to within four points of ladder leader Heidelberg United in what is shaping as a closely fought season among the teams in the top half of the standings.

After five games in a row at home, the Cavaliers will hit the road to face United in a blockbuster at Olympic Village on Sunday.

Elsewhere, the Melbourne Knights suffered a devastating 5-0 loss to Bulleen Lions at Knights Stadium on Friday night.

The Knights conceded five goals in the second half, all in the space of nine minutes – from the 49th minute to the 58th.

The loss leaves the Knights third last on the ladder ahead of a crucial trip to fourth-last Port Melbourne Sharks on Friday night.

St Albans was on the receiving end of an 8-1 drubbing at the hands of South Melbourne at Lakeside Stadium on Sunday. The Saints’ only goal came through Calvin Mbarga late in the first half, but South already had four by that stage.

Three points adrift on the bottom of the ladder, St Albans will be desperate to get back into the winners’ circle when it hosts Bentleigh Greens at Churchill Reserve on Sunday.
