A last quarter fade-out proved costly for Melton Thoroughbreds on Saturday night in Big V men’s division 1.
Hosting Geelong Supercats, the Thoroughbreds were keen to get their second win on the board and for most of the match it looked like it just might happen.
The Thoroughbreds led by three points at quarter-time and the margin remained that at half-time.
They kept the pressure up in the third quarter – their best quarter of the match – and opened up a six-point lead into the final, having led by as many as 12 points.
The Thoroughbreds got the lead out to nine points early in the last when Ivan Harris hit a three early.
But the Supercats grabbed the lead with 1.04 left on the clock, and managed to hold on to win.
The Thoroughbreds made just four shots in the final quarter, with Harris making three of those.
Four of the five Thoroughbreds starters finished in double figures, with skipper Jason Todorov top-scoring on 25.
There was little support from the bench though, and the Supercats dominated bench points 28-4.
The Thoroughbreds didn’t have too long to recover, backing up on Sunday against Sunbury Jets who had Saturday night off.
It was a game that went down to the wire, with the sides trading the lead late into the last quarter.
The Jets hit the front for the last time with 2.16 on the clock and managed to hold off the Thoroughbreds 106-102.
Todorov top-scored again with 24, while the other four starters all scored double figures.
