Moorabool’s festival of words

Bookworms, literary geniuses and famous authors will descend on Bacchus Marsh this weekend.

The inaugural Moorabool Festival of Stories will showcase the shire’s “rich storytelling culture”, bring together some of Australia’s award-winning authors, and invest in the future of local writers.

Maddingley author Allyse Near will bring festival-goers into her world of gothic fairytales and speak on a panel about her top writing tips.

Near published her first young adult fiction story, Fairytale of Wilde Girls, in 2013. She says her love for creative writing was sparked by her love for reading. Her top tip for budding writers? “It’s only your own insecurity that can stop you – everything else is just an excuse.”

Moorabool Writers Craft committee member, and one of the festival organisers, Wayne Marshall said the group was initially planning a small event, but it had “just snowballed into something big”.

The group secured Miles Franklin-winning author A.S. Patrić and Victorian Premier’s Literary Award winner Jan Harper to speak. The festival will run from 10am-4.30pm on Saturday, May 20 at the Lerderderg library, 215 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh.
