Flanders tribute ‘grows’ for Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour

A plan to flank the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour with thousands of red poppies has kept locals busy lately.

Members of the Bacchus Marsh RSL Ladies Auxiliary have been clacking their knitting needles and crochet hooks to craft some 3000 fabric poppies in the bright red shade of the flowers from the French fields of Flanders – the western front of WWI.

The poppies were then woven into 300 wreaths, which will be laid against each tree as part of the honour avenue’s centenary celebrations next year.

A commemorative service is planned for August 11 next year, when a bugle will be sounded to mark the 100th anniversary of the planting of the famous boulevard of Canadian elm trees, as it sounded when they were planted.

Bacchus Marsh Great War Centenary committee member Tonia Dudzik and the Bacchus Marsh RSL Ladies Auxiliary president Bev Kummerlowe thanked the community’s many craftspeople for their efforts in “growing” the poppies for the wreaths.

“The 300 wreaths will be a magnificent tribute to the soldiers from the Bacchus Marsh District who served in World War I,” Ms Dudzik said.
