Melton Hockey revel in new home

Melton Hockey Club is ready for a new era following the move to its new state-of-the-art facilities in the middle of last season.

Mustangs stalwart Kellie McLaren says the new headquarters at Atherstone are “brilliant”.

“The old place didn’t have running water and only one toilet,” she said of the club’s Mowbray College home. “Having the new facility has definitely attracted new players. There’s a really good feel about the club.”

As well as having new changerooms and facilities, the club has access to more than one pitch – meaning more than one age group can train at the same time.

The club will have a grand opening of the new headquarters on April 1 and celebrate the club’s 40th anniversary at the same time.

The club’s 40th year was last season, but the Mustangs held off celebrating until the move had been completed.

As well as providing better facilities for the club’s current players, McLaren said the move had opened up new opportunities.

“The club is hosting a junior tournament, which is open to all clubs in the state, in late March,” she said.

“It’s the first time we’ve been able to hold a tournament. The [old] grounds had been deemed unsafe the last four years.”

On field, the Mustangs will have new coaches for all their senior sides. They expect to announce the new coaches in coming weeks.
