The Pub Clinic back to serve up men’s health in Myrniong

The Pub Clinic is back in town, giving men across Moorabool the chance to have their beer and see a doctor, too.

Bacchus Marsh doctor Ravin Sadhai will hold his popular Pub Clinic in Myrniong this month in a bid to reach out to men on important health issues.

Dr Sadhai started the once-a-year clinics after two men he knew died suddenly in their mid 40s from stroke or heart attack.

“On reviewing their medical records at my clinic I found they never really came in, and they were largely preventable deaths,” he said.

“It got me thinking how we could engage men in health. So rather than getting them to the clinic, we thought we’d go to them and what better place to do that than the pub?”

The Pub Clinics have come a long way since launching in 2008.

More than 150 men attended last year’s two sessions, in Myrniong and Trentham. This year’s, at Myrniong’s Plough Hotel, will be based on “how not to get diabetes and bowel cancer”.

It will include presentations by specialist doctors, a dietitian and personal trainers, who volunteer their time.

As well, nurses will take blood pressure and weight and height measurements.

Dr Sadhai says the free event will also include free beer and food thanks to a number of community sponsors.

“It’s an important initiative to get men to think about preventative health,” he said. “We’re trying to prevent medical issues before they happen.”
