Diabetes educator Sheree Rennie has teamed up with Bacchus Marsh and Melton radio stations to provide diabetes information for residents.
Ms Rennie hosts a diabetes education segment fortnightly on Apple FM Bacchus Marsh and 979FM Melton.
Ms Rennie, who has type 1 diabetes, said education was important because of the disorder’s prevalence in the region.
“Listening is a good tool,” she said. “I find a lot of people are listening to community radio and a lot of people use that as an avenue to learn about what’s going on in their town.”
Diabetes Australia data shows suburbs in Melbourne’s west have some of Australia’s highest rates of diabetes.
Ms Rennie said the radio show was not only beneficial for diabetics, but it also helped raise awareness among family members and others.
“[It helps them] be aware of what diabetes is and how serious it can be and whether they think they’re getting enough support or need more help.”
Ms Rennie’s segment runs for about 20 minutes and has key information including helping connect listeners to community resources.
She also speaks about her own experiences and encourages listeners to send through questions or concerns.
