At the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month, Australians will ‘remember’ soldiers who lost their lives.
And as the day nears, Returned and Services League’s across the country, including the Melton sub-branch, will gear up for the annual Poppy Appeal.
Poppies were among the first plants to bloom in the “devastated battlefields” of Belgium and France, and since 1921 they have been used in remembrance of those who fell during times of war. These days, the iconic red flowers are sold to raise funds for current and former service men and women.
Melton RSL president Ian Lawrey said the community and members showed a “phenomenal” commitment to making the Poppy Appeal a success.
“It is humbling to see the wave of support and enthusiasm by the locals who support the Poppy Appeal in so many ways,” Mr Lawrey said.
