Melton South Primary School Cricket Club rapt to be fielding a junior side

Melton South Primary School Cricket Club’s dream of having a junior team again take to the park has come to fruition.

After not fielding juniors last season for the first time since 1992, the Royals put out a call before this season to attract new players.

Club president Paul Davies said the club got enough players to field an under-12 side.

The Royals under-12 side played its first game of the season on Friday night against Eynesbury Eagles Green in the Melton Junior Cricket Association.

The match was a thriller with the Eagles winning by two runs.

“We managed to get 16 kids, which is fantastic,” Davies said.

“We’ve got a couple of eight-year-olds, through to some 11-year-olds.

“To have just 15 players at training, to see that many players wanting to play is a positive for the club.”

Davies said he hoped it was just the beginning of a re-establishment of a junior program at the club.

“We need to make sure we sustain the junior program,” he said.

“Growth of the program is important for us.”

The Royals’ top two senior sides will wait another week to take to the pitch, with the Victorian Turf Cricket Association calling off the opening round.
