Melton teenager wins apprentice of the year title

Ebony Paris-Webb is years ahead of her peers.

The 17-year-old is already undertaking third-year hairdressing work as a first-year apprentice.

And her hard work and commitment were validated at the Business Excellence Awards earlier this month when she was crowned Melton’s apprentice of the year across all trades and skills.

“It was amazing; I didn’t expect it and it’s just a big confidence booster,” Ebony said of her win.

The Melton teen, who is doing her salon training with The House of Kukla on High Street, says she’s grateful for all the opportunities that have come her way.

“I’ve learned more than what first years have learned … I can’t say I’ve just been pushed to the side. It’s been really good.”

The secret to success is passion, Ebony believes.

“I think you need to have the passion for hairdressing and the dedication.

“I used to come home from work, sit my mum down and foil her hair with just conditioner and baby powder.”

She’s come a long way since then. Ebony is now styling, foiling and colouring clients’ hair and already has her own client base.

“I think you’ve got to be keen and my passion for hairdressing is very strong. I like the creativity and the art of it.”

The House of Kukla also took home the mayoral achievement award.
