Cold night’s journey to understanding in annual winter sleepout

As the mercury dips overnight, Megan, Ken and Victoria (pictured) will think about the thousands of homeless people sleeping rough.

The Catholic Regional College students are taking part in the school’s annual winter sleepout next month to raise awareness of and money for homelessness services.

One Voice and Hope Street representatives will speak on the night about the work they do, reminding students “anyone at any time could find themselves in similar circumstances”, social justice co-ordinator Margaret Rowe-Watts said.

Students and staff will meet at the school one night next month to share a meal similar to those available at charity soup kitchens.

“During the night, the students will spend some time outside in private reflection while experiencing the cold and loneliness felt by those who are homeless,” Ms Rowe-Watts said.

“For our students, it is usually a huge awakening, a realisation that homelessness affects all aspects of our community.”

She said the winter sleepout was one of many initiatives the school was taking part in to put faith into action and being “of service to our wider community”.
