Bowlers at a Bacchus Marsh club are delighted after receiving a $2500 grant.

The money, from VicHealth’s Active Club Grants, will go towards purchasing more bowls for the Avenue Bowling Club’s 130 members, chairman Peter Kay says.

“Running the club is an expensive experience,” Mr Kay said.

“With the grant money, we [can] buy sets of second-hand bowls for our corporate challenges in February and March.

“We invite all community groups, businesses and council people to get in teams to have a competition.”

Mr Kay said most of the club’s members were aged over 60 and the game gave them an outlet to socialise, exercise and meet like-minded people.

“Bowling is good, particularly for older people because it keeps them active,” Mr Kay said.

He said the game was not strenuous.

“If you play a game for four hours, you’re walking up and down to pick up the bowl,” he said.
