Fund ‘rescues’ firies

Melton firies have received almost $3000 from a local community fund to help buy new rescue equipment.

IGA Melton raised $2641.76 through its Community Chest for the Melton Fire Station.

Senior station officer Jayson Hirt said the donation had ensured the brigade could purchase equipment to better serve the community.

He says the funds will be used to buy a number of fire-fighting items including branches [nozzles] and a new road accident rescue tool.

The brigade’s auxiliary had already raised some money to assist with the purchase of the rescue tool, which will be used to extricate victims from motor vehicle accidents.

“The donation of these funds is vital to the brigade’s ongoing service delivery to Melton and surrounding communities,” Mr Hirt said.

“New technology in firefighting sees the need to upgrade or purchase new equipment that becomes available.

“Without donations such as IGAs and other fundraising activities completed by the brigade, we would not have the capacity to deliver high standards of service in not only firefighting but also road accident rescue, hazardous materials response and other specialist rescue areas.”

As part of the IGA Community Chest fund, two cents from every product sold in the Melton store marked with the community chest logo is donated to the local community.

IGA supports the Melton brigade annually, in appreciation of the work that staff and volunteers do to serve the community.
