Bacchus Marsh Rotary Club puts on art show

Hundreds of people from all over the state are expected to visit Bacchus Marsh this weekend for the Rotary Club’s annual art show.

About 650 pieces will be on display at the Community Hall from June 5-8.

The club’s arts show committee chairman, Peter Shilton, says everything, from paintings to sculptures and cross-stitching, will be on display and up for sale.

“There was a time when Rotary clubs did it all over the country,” Mr Shilton said of art shows.

“Now it’s come down to three or four big ones and we’re one of them.”

He said it was the 45th art show in Bacchus Marsh and a lot of people were regular visitors.

“It’s all a little bit weather-dependent, though,” he said. “If the weather’s really bad, we don’t get quite so many, but we’re holding it at a nice, warm venue.”

While most of the artworks on display are created by local artists, Mr Shilton said the club received submissions from all over Australia.

“We’ve got stuff from Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australian and locally,” he said.

“You can pick up something for $650 and get value out of it for years and years. How can you place a [monetary] value on something like that?”

An art show gala will be held from 7pm on Friday, June 5, at the Community Hall in Main Street, Bacchus Marsh. Tickets are $30 and include champagne and supper.

The show continues from 10am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday, June 6-7, and from 10am-4pm on the Monday. Tickets cost $8.
