Smashing records on the green is just how Jarryd Davies rolls.

The 13-year-old from Melton took out the under-18 singles title at the recent Bowls Victoria state championships at Clayton and is believed to be the youngest winner.

Jarryd beat Bundoora RSL’s Riley Hodgson by one shot in a quarter-final which drew a big crowd to watch its thrilling climax.

And after rolling Melbourne’s Curtis Hanley in the semis, he saw off Moonee Valley’s Blake Andrews in the final.

Jarryd and his partner, Kyle Kraus, were also runners-up in the under-18 pairs.

Mum Marianne said Jarryd’s friends and family were all behind him.

“It’s been amazing,” she said. “We still can’t believe it. It’s quite a big achievement for someone so young and we’re very proud.”

Mrs Davies says her son has been bowling for four years, plays at least four days a week and is obsessed with the sport.

“None of our [immediate] family bowled before but now we all do,” she says. “My mother took Jarryd to bowls one day then he came home and said he wanted to play lawn bowls.

“Now once he’s on the green, you can’t get him home. I have to walk out of the club and yell, ‘The bus is leaving!’ ”

Jarryd now has his sights set on the indoor under-18 title, an exclusive invitational tournament called the Golden Nugget, in July and a back-to-back under-18 state lawn bowls title next year.
