New road adds to traffic woes

A new road has arrived in Truganina but not all locals are happy.

Grand Boulevard is a 1.7-kilometre arterial road running between the estate communities of Grandview and Mt Atkinson.

The single-lane road, which cost $10 million, was designed by developer Stockland to ease congestion around the Western Freeway and Hopkins Road.

But Mt Atkinson resident Melanie Blackman said the lack of multiple lanes only causes traffic to bottleneck, something that could have easily been avoided.

“I can’t believe the way they’ve done it … instead of doing it right the first time, it’s a Band-Aid fix,” she said.

“It is a disappointing result … they haven’t addressed the number of drivers in the area everyday.”

Osama Usuf is also a Mt Atkinson local. He said that while the road was an improvement, there was still a lot to be done to amend the issue.

“It’s a step in the right direction but has it solved the problem? No,” he said.

“It’s been congested from day one. It doesn’t really make sense for it to be a single lane road.”

Mr Usuf said the road was partially helpful but did not unlock local traffic.

“It makes life easier and more difficult at the same time. It’s a good thing… but if you use it in the morning it is very congested.”

A spokesperson from Stockland said the developer would continue to look into solutions to improve the problems faced by commuters.

“We are committed to working proactively and constructively with the relevant authorities to help improve traffic flow around the community,” the spokesperson said.
