Western Jets’ Charlie O’Connor Moreira will stay close to home, while former number one draft pick Kristie-Lee Weston-Turner has got her wish in the AFLW draft.
O’Connor Moreira, who was a revelation for the Jets in the back half of the season, was picked by the Western Bulldogs at pick number 45.
Speaking before the draft, O’Connor Moreira said an ankle injury early in the season meant she thought her draft prospects were over.
Her move from the forward line to the wing was also a big factor in her being drafted.
“I’m pretty grateful to be able to experience it this year,” she told Star Weekly before the draft.
“My ultimate goal is to get drafted and after what happened at the start of the year I didn’t think it was going to happen.
“Whatever happens on draft night happens.”
O’Connor Moreira, made her senior debut with Williamstown CYMS this season, having played juniors at Altona and Point Cook.
Weston-Turner will play with North Melbourne in next year’s AFLW season.
After the Kangaroos and Western Bulldogs couldn’t get a trade done, Weston-Turner had to nominate for the draft.
She managed to get through to pick 37, the Kangaroos first pick and they quickly picked her up.
Weston-Turner, who was drafted from Spotswood and the Western Jets, had played eight games in two seasons at the Bulldogs.
She played just one game this year.
Weston-Turner is still connected to the western suburbs, coaching Albion’s under-16 girls team.
North Melbourne AFLW list manager Flynn Loft said Weston-Turner brings a wealth of talent and will be a valuable addition to the team.
“We’re excited to welcome a player of Kristie-Lee’s unique ability and immense potential into our program,” he said.
“We saw in her junior career and in glimpses in her first two seasons that she is an athletic player with a genuine X-factor that can change a game.”
